Preeclampsia, also known as Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH), is a serious condition that can occur during pregnancy. It is characterized by high blood pressure and often includes proteinuria (protein in the urine) after 20 weeks of gestation in a woman who previously had normal blood pressure.
Causes
Placental Problems:
Issues with the development and function of the placenta.
Immune System Factors:
Abnormal immune response to the pregnancy.
Genetic Factors:
Family history of preeclampsia or PIH.
Pre-existing Conditions:
Chronic hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, or autoimmune disorders.
Other Risk Factors:
First pregnancy, multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets), obesity, and maternal age (younger than 20 or older than 35).
